Asking for Help
Posting a request is how you ask your community for help. It takes about a minute.
How to Post a Request
Posting a request takes 3 clicks:
- Tap the + button — it expands to show "Get Help" and "Get Service"
- Pick a type — choose from the grid (General, Ride, Service, Event, Borrow, or custom types)
- Describe your need — fill in the description, set urgency, and post
Your request will appear in the community feed straight away.
Request Types
- General Help 🤝 — Anything that doesn't fit a specific category
- Ride 🚗 — You need a lift somewhere; include pickup and dropoff locations
- Service 🔧 — You need a skill: repairs, tutoring, tech help
- Event 📅 — You're organising something and need help or volunteers
- Borrow 📦 — You need to borrow something; specify what and for how long
Your community may also have custom request types added by the founder.
Writing a Good Request
Be specific. "Help with moving" is hard to say yes to. "Help carry boxes from a 2nd-floor flat to a moving van on Saturday morning — about 2 hours" is something someone can picture and commit to.
For example: "I need a lift to the airport on Friday morning — 7am, NW6 area. Happy to cover petrol."
Be honest about effort. If something will take three hours, say three hours.
Set a date if it matters. If you need help this weekend, set the expiration before then so your request doesn't linger after it's irrelevant.
What Happens After
- Your request appears in the feed
- Members express interest or accept your request
- You receive a notification
- You message them to coordinate the details
- Once complete, mark it as fulfilled
- Karma transfers from your balance to the helper's
Tips
- Post earlier than you think you need to
- A clear, friendly title gets more responses
- If it's time-sensitive, say so in the description
Scheduled Requests
By default, a request is posted as "ASAP" — you need help as soon as someone is available. If you know when you need help, you can schedule the request instead.
To schedule a request:
- Fill in your request as normal
- In the "When do you need this?" field, choose Set a date and time
- Pick the date and time you need the help
Scheduled requests behave the same as ASAP requests in the feed, but with one extra feature: Dibs.
After posting a scheduled request, Karmyq may prompt you to give one trusted provider a private heads-up before the request goes public. The provider has a limited window (20% of your lead time) to accept or decline. If they accept, you're matched directly. If they decline or the window expires, your request automatically broadcasts to the community.
See Sending a Private Request (Dibs) for the full details.
Hiring a Provider
To request help directly from a specific provider:
- Browse to Providers in the navigation
- Find the provider you want and tap Get Service on their card
- The wizard opens pre-filled with their service type — just add your description and post
You can also tap Get Service on the provider's profile page. Your request will be linked to that provider and they'll be notified first.
